Senate in Plenary Confirms Danbatta for Second Term as EVC/CEO of NCC

In a report monitored from TNTV Network this afternoon, the second term of 5 years for Prof. Garba Umar Danbatta as EVC/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has been confirmed by the Senate in Plenary.

It was gathered that, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Communication, Sen Oluremi Tinubu, who was represented by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, (Ekiti Central), a member of the Committee, presented the report of the Committee to the Senate.

“I, hereby, rise to present the report of the Senate Committee on Communication, on the Screening of Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, for reappointment as the Executive Vice Chairman, (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer, (CEO), for Second term of 5years of the Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC)”, Senator Bamidele stated.

“The nominee met the statutory requirements, which also validates his competency. Preliminary checks do not reveal any form of fraud, or vices on Danbatta’s record”, Senator Bamidele further stressed.

The motion was seconded by Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, (Kwara Central), also, a member of the Committee thereafter, endorsed by the Senate.

It will be recalled that, the Senate reacted to a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari, to consider Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta for reappointment as Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC on Tuesday, July 7, 2020.

This was after the Minister for Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, had recommended Prof. Garba Umar Danbatta to the President for reappointment as Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.

The Senate, thereafter, considered the President’s letter and invited Prof, Umar Garba Danbatta, for screening by the Senate Committee on Communication, on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, where he performed well and was recommended to the Senate for confirmation.

The screening and confirmation exercise had been carried out, in accordance with the provisions of S. 8(1) and (4), of the Nigerian Communications Commission Act, (NCA), 2003.

The confirmation was read out after the exercise, by the Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan.
