According to news monitored on Kano Focus online media, the Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC), in continuation of its drive to sanitise SIM card registration, has moved to Kano, raiding markets, to rid them of unauthorised sales of pre-registered SIM cards.
The report stated that the raid was jointly conducted by officials of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, officers of the Department of State Security Services, NCC and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
“You cannot register with somebody’s name and as well use it”, Salisu Abdu, Head of Enforcement, Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, is said to have commented.
The raid was said to have yielded fruitful results, as the 11 traders engaging in the illegal act were apprehended by the security agencies, while the identities of major dealers that provide these traders with pre-registered SIM cards have been revealed by those apprehended.
“We want NSCDC to invite these major dealers, interrogate them, find out how they come about with registered SIM cards because, SIM cards are to be personally registered – there should be no proxy registration”, Abdu further revealed.
Abdu noted that the proliferation of pre-registered SIM cards, has contributed to the current security challenges facing the country.
If SIM cards are properly registered, it will be easier for security personnel to trace the culprits.
He, also, noted that what the law says is that each person purchasing a SIM card is expected to register the SIM card with his/her name and biometric data.
“If there will be any issue to do with security, it will be easy for security agencies to trace the owner of such SIM cards”, Abdu concluded.
