Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC), has pledged the support of the Nigerian Commissions Commission, NCC, to the National Broadband Plan Implementation Steering Committee, to oversee the implementation of the National Broadband Plan, 2020-2025.
Danbatta made this pledge, as the Committee was being inaugurated by Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, in Abuja today, Thursday, July 9, 2020.
Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, while inaugurating the members of the committee, this is part of the journey for a digital Nigeria, which he and his colleagues in the Ministry, parastatals and other stakeholders started, when he assumed duty in the Ministry,
“The focus of the world today, is about digital economy. Through digital economy, we will be able to create millions of jobs and at the same time, we would be able to improve the conditions of living of our citizens”, Pantami stressed.
This Steering Committee has a tremendous work to do. It is to continue monitoring the obstacles to broaden penetration and at the same time, monitoring the implementation of this Broadband Plan. They will engage all the stakeholders”, Pantami concluded.
Earlier at the event, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC), had congratulated the Minister for putting in place the steering committee, noting that it is a step in the right direction.
“It is important to have modalities and stage by stage implementation process is necessary, in order to achieve the desired goals, as encapsulated in the plan”, Danbatta observed.
Dr. Abimbola H. Alale, the Managing Director Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), also spoke at the event.
“It is not just about having a policy but implementing it and seeing results and driving Nigeria to a digital economy and digital country, as the Honorable Minister desires and he has been pushing for”, Alale reiterated.
On his part Inuwa Kashifu Abdullahi, The Director-General of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), stated that the inauguration of the steering committee, was another milestone in accomplishing a digital Nigeria.
“At this Ministry, (Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy), we are not just about policies that will end up in shelves, gathering dust, but we are implementing every policy and this Broadband Plan, is what is going to provide all the needed infrastructure for our digital economy”, Kashifu noted.
Also speaking at the event, Prof. M.B. Abubakar, the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Ltd, also, congratulated the Minister for putting the Committee in place.
“I would wish the Implementation Steering Committee a very good success”, Abubakar concluded.
The Chairman of the Committee, Engr. Ubale Maska, who is the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, while accepting t challenge, stated that digital economy is central to the development of any nation.
“Broadband, in turn, is central to any digital economy. The implication of this, as the Minister mentioned earlier, is that this Committee is entrusted with the steering of the implementation of the plan that would place our country at par, with all developed nations of the world”, Maska noted
“We are humbled and on behalf of my members, I would like to express our total commitment and dedication to ensuring timely and complete implementation of the National Broadband Plan 2020-2025”, he concluded.
Members of the committee were drawn from all stakeholders, which include the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and its Parastatals, the Ministry of Power, The Ministry of Transport, the Academia, the World Bank and the Private sector.
