News monitored from TNTV Network in Abuja, this afternoon, indicates that the Nigerian Senate has confirmed Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, for a second term, as the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.
Prof. Danbatta who appeared before the Senate Committee on Communications, today, Wednesday, July 15, 2020, in Abuja for screening, had earlier been re-appointed for a second term shot, by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the report, Danbatta received encomiums from the members of the Senate that screened him.
The members of the Senate commitee on communications, acknowledge the exemplary leadership that Danbatta had displayed at the Commission , in the past 5 years, as the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, who stood in for Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Chairperson, Senate Committee on Communications, who was absent from the screening, expressed pleasure at the EVC/CEO, stating that he has shown the ability of a leader.
Senator Oloriegbe stated that, the confirmation is in accordance with the provisions of S 81(84) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, which states that:
“All Commissioners are to be appointed by the President, in accordance with Section 7 of the Act, from the six geo political zones of Nigeria, subject to confirmation by the Senate and each commissioner from the further period of five years, which the President may renew”.
According to TNTV Network, other members of the Committee, extolled the giant strides of the EVC/CEO, in the last 5 years, especially, in the area of SIM Registration and Quality of Service.
Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, also, urged the EVC/CEO, to continue to ensure that he continues to build the legacy he has established in the telecom sector, over the years and also, make sure his relationship with the National Assembly remains cordial.
Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, assured the Committee on collaboration with the Senate Committee on Communications, the National Assembly and other agencies, individuals and organisations.
Other members of the Senate Committee on Communications include; Senator Sandy Onor, Senator Kashim Shettima, Senator Abiodun Olujimi, Senator Omar Jeff and Senator Bukachuwa.
President Muhammadu Buhari, had on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, written to the Senate to screen Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta for re-appointment for a second term of five years, as the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.
This was after the Honorable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, had recommended the re-appointment of Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta to the President, for a second term in office, in June 2020, according to the provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, which allows for second term.
This is wishing Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, a successful term of another 5 years, as the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, of the foremost telecom regulatory body, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.
