5,959 COVID-19 Cases Officially Recorded In Nigeria – President Buhari May Address The Nation Again Today On Way Forward

After carrying out Thirty Three Thousand, Nine Hundred And Seventy, (33,970), tests, Nigeria, has so far, officially, recorded Five Thousand, Nine Hundred And Fifty-Nine, (5,959), COVID-19 cases.

These figures were released as updates, on the evening of Sunday, May 17, 2020, by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, during the PTF briefing on COVID-19.

The update released, also, shows that, Three Hundred And Thirty-Eight, (338), new cases were recorded yesterday, while One Thousand, Five Hundred And Ninety-Four, (1,594), cases have, so far been discharged.

Deaths from COVID-19 in Nigeria stood at One Hundred And Eighty-Two, (182), according to the update, while the number of current active cases, in Nigeria is, Four Thousand, One Hundred And Eighty-Three, (4,183).

The update shows that, Lagos State recorded One Hundred And Seventy-Seven, (177), new cases, while Kano State recorded Sixty Four, (64), new cases, with the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, recording Twenty-One, (21), new cases.

Rivers State recorded Sixteen, (16), new cases, while Plateau State recorded Fourteen, (14), new cases, with Oyo State recording Eleven, (11), new cases.

Katsina State recorded Nine, (9), new cases, while Jigawa and Kaduna States recorded Four, (4), new cases each, with, Abia, Bauchi and Borno States, recording Three, (3), new cases each.

Akwa Ibom and Delta States, recorded Two, (2), new cases each, while Kebbi, Ondo and Sokoto States recorded One, (1), new case each.

Meanwhile, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, is likely to address the nation again this evening, as the first phase of the easing of the lockdown ends today.

President Buhari is expected to give further directions, on the next phase of the lockdown, in the fight against COVID-19, based on the advice he has received from the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who doubles as, Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, stated yesterday, after seeing the President.

“From the 4th of May to date is 13 days, tomorrow, (i.e., today, Monday, May 18, 2020), we should expect new processes to be put in place, but we have to give him all the material details that will help us in preparing for the future, so that is why we are here”, he stressed while visiting the President at Aso Rock, on Sunday, May 17, 2020.

Because we are in, for the long haul, this is not a short distance race. It is a marathon and we have to keep everything in perspective, but remember, on the 27th of April, he addressed the nation and put in place, the easing down of the lockdown, effective from the 4th of May”, Mustapha maintained.
